The system of classifying living things that we use today was originally developed by Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus (1707 - 1778). There have been changes over the years as more kingdoms, phyla, classes, orders, families, genera, species and varieties have been identified and developed, but the basic system and the use of Latin remains the same. This photo gallery, which honors Linnaeus' huge contribution to the human/nature waltz, has special secondary captions indicating the official latin genus and species names for the plants and animals in the photos. Changes are still underway, and currently some species of plants are being consolidated, but as of today, according to my field guides or seed catalogues, these names are accurate.
